Q&A with Tracey Heimpel

Describe your business in one sentence.

Tracey: We make thoughtfully designed, beautiful furniture to support an improved healthcare experience for patients, care providers, and visitors in medical and therapeutic environments.

How has your company evolved over the years?

Tracey: Stance’s beginnings are rooted in our commitment to creating industrial-grade products which are over-engineered for maximum quality, cleanability, and longevity. In the 18 years since, that commitment hasn’t changed – but we have doubled down on it, evolving toward a greater mission that places even higher standards on our products. This commitment to blending high-quality engineering with high-quality design is something that continues to set Stance apart. It’s what we call Improving Lives by Design, and it drives our equal emphasis on beautiful, thoughtfully designed aesthetics as well as function and durability. In the past decade, this vision propelled Stance to break through the US healthcare furniture industry as an award-winning innovator of products that go beyond what is expected – and support healing, tranquility and comfort in any environment.

What trends are you seeing in the industry?

Tracey: Designers and facility planners are increasingly leaning in to aesthetics that conjure nature and soothing tones, especially in Behavioral Health environments. Often, this impact can be largely supported by the furniture itself – through pieces that offer soft instead of rigid corners, or warm textures instead of slick, clinical-feeling upholsteries. Other times, however, calming environments can be supported through what is not seen: for example, cleaner and less cluttered lines of sight in a space, or low-profile, minimalist-designed chairs that support high-traffic areas like waiting rooms. Stance’s 2023 Nightingale Gold award winning case goods collection, Lotus, embodies these design goals, seamlessly blending aesthetics and functionality, with sustainable materials to add warmth with wood-grained details.
